Visa-free, visa on arrival or transit visa — a plain-English guide to getting through Doha immigration.
Qatar has one of the Gulf's most open entry systems, but the rules changed several times since 2022 and old blog posts still confuse people at the airport. This is the current position, checked against the official Hayya and Ministry of Interior guidance as of September 2026. Always confirm for your own passport before flying.

For layover passengers
If your nationality is visa-free, you can walk out for a few hours the same as any tourist — follow 'Exit to Doha' after landing, not 'Transfer'. If it is not, apply on Hayya before you fly; the old Qatar Airways transit-visa scheme is no longer needed for most travellers. Allow 30–45 minutes for immigration each way and keep your onward boarding pass with you.
What immigration may ask for
- Passport with at least 6 months' validity.
- Onward or return ticket.
- Hotel booking or a host's address (occasionally asked; have it on your phone).
- For Hayya visas: the approval PDF or app screen.
- Travel insurance is not mandatory for tourists but is strongly recommended.
Common mistakes
- Following 'Transfer' signs and ending up airside — you cannot get back out without immigration.
- Assuming a UAE visa covers Qatar — it does not, though a valid UAE residence permit helps some nationalities.
- Passports with less than 6 months' validity; airlines will refuse boarding.
- Trusting pre-2023 blog posts about the 'free transit visa' — check Hayya instead.

Lists change; the Ministry of Interior's visa checker on the Hayya site is the source of truth. If in doubt, apply on Hayya — approval for a tourist visa is usually within 72 hours and costs QAR 100.
Children and families
Children need their own passport (no parental endorsements) and follow the same rule as their nationality. Families travelling with one parent should carry a copy of the other parent's consent if the surnames differ; it is rarely asked for but avoids questions.
What immigration is like
Fast and polite. E-gates take biometric passports from most visa-free countries; the manned desks scan your passport and take a photo. Nobody asks about hotels unless your passport is on the Hayya list. The process from aircraft door to arrivals hall is 20–45 minutes depending on the hour.
