Four plans for four layover lengths — from airside only to a full day with a desert safari.
How much of Qatar you can see depends on one number: the hours between landing and your next departure. Below are the four plans we actually run, each with a built-in 2-hour return buffer. Times assume visa-free entry (most nationalities).

Under 5 hours: stay airside
Leaving the terminal is not worth the risk. Hamad is one of the best airports to be stuck in: the Orchard indoor garden, the 7-metre Lamp Bear, Al Mourjan lounge (from QAR 350 or free with business class), quiet rooms, a pool and spa at the Oryx Airport Hotel, and showers in the Vitality wellbeing centre. 6–8 hours: the city
Museum of Islamic Art, Souq Waqif and the Corniche in three hours with a private guide, or with 8 hours add Katara and a drive through The Pearl. The 6-hour itinerary post has it minute by minute.
8–10 hours: the desert
A layover desert safari: airport pickup, 70 minutes to Sealine, dune bashing, the Inland Sea, camel ride and sandboarding, then straight back — about 5.5 hours door to door. Best between October and April; in summer we run it at dawn for morning arrivals.
12 hours: city and desert
The combo: MIA and the souq in the morning (or Katara if it is a Friday), lunch, then the safari from 2.30 pm returning for an evening departure. It is a full day; you will sleep on the plane.
24 hours: a proper visit
- 1 Evening arrival: airport hotel or a West Bay hotel ($90–150), sunset dhow cruise if you land before 4 pm.
- 2 Morning: National Museum, then MIA and the souq for lunch.
- 3 Afternoon: desert safari to the Inland Sea.
- 4 Evening: dinner at The Pearl or Katara, then to the airport.

The two rules that never change
- 1 Be back at departures 2 hours before the flight (3 in peak December and during major events).
- 2 Add 45 minutes after landing for immigration, more if you land between 6 and 9 pm when the European and Asian waves overlap.
Summer adjustments
From May to September the desert safari runs only at dawn or after 4 pm, so a midday layover is a city day: museums, Msheireb and the souq's covered lanes. Night layovers are actually better in summer — the Corniche, Katara and the souq are at their best after dark and the dhow cruise sails at 8 pm.
