Karwa Taxi vs Uber vs Private Transfer in Doha: Which Should You Use, and When?

Three ways to get a car in Doha, one honest verdict for each situation.

Doha's turquoise Karwa taxis are cheap and honest, Uber and Careem work well, and private transfers exist for the times neither is good enough. This is how they compare in practice, from a company that runs one of the three.

Karwa (Mowasalat) taxis

  • Metered, cards accepted, government-run.
  • Hail on the street, at ranks (malls, hotels, airport) or via the Karwa app.
  • Airport pickups carry a QAR 25 surcharge and the rank queue can reach 30 minutes at night.
  • Best for: short city hops, daytime, when you are already out.

Uber and Careem

  • Similar base fares to Karwa; surge pricing at peak hours and during events.
  • Airport pickups from a designated zone; drivers sometimes wait for surge to fall.
  • Careem offers 'Hala' (licensed Karwa taxis via the app) and 'Business' cars.
  • Best for: app users who want cashless door-to-door and can wait a few minutes.

Private transfers are fixed-price and pre-assigned — no meter, no surge, no queue.

Private transfer

  • Fixed price agreed before you travel: airport to West Bay $35, The Pearl $40, Lusail $45; van $60.
  • Driver waits with a name board, tracks your flight, 60 minutes free waiting, child seats free.
  • Invoice in USD or QAR; pay by card online.
  • Best for: airport arrivals (especially at night or with family), business travel, groups of 4+, anyone who values certainty.

Taxi etiquette and tips

  • Karwa drivers are mostly from South Asia and speak English; give the landmark or hotel name rather than a street address.
  • Confirm the meter is on. It should start at QAR 4 (QAR 10 at night).
  • Cards are accepted in Karwa; carry QAR 50 in small notes for the rare terminal failure.
  • Tipping is not expected; rounding up is appreciated.
  • Women travelling alone can request a female driver via Karwa's app ('Karwa Ladies').

When apps let you down

Airport pickups at 1 am with surge at 2.5×; Friday evenings; the week of National Day; when it rains (rare, but the city stops). In every case a pre-booked transfer is the same price it was yesterday, and the driver is already there.

Accessibility, child seats and luggage

Karwa has wheelchair-accessible vans bookable in its app; apps do not guarantee them. Child seats: neither taxis nor apps supply them, and Qatari law does not require them in taxis — for young children a pre-booked transfer with a fitted seat is the safe option. Luggage: sedans take two large cases; for more, book a van or ask Karwa for a 'family' taxi.
