A desert safari is the one thing almost every visitor to Qatar books, and for good reason: within an hour of leaving your Doha hotel you are sliding down 60-metre dunes towards a stretch of sea that reaches 15 kilometres inland from the Gulf. This guide explains exactly what happens, what it costs, and the small decisions — time of day, shared or private, sunset or overnight — that make the difference between a good afternoon and the best day of your trip. It is written by the team that runs these safaris every day.

What a desert safari in Qatar actually includes

• Pickup from your Doha hotel, apartment or Hamad International Airport in an air-conditioned 4x4 (Land Cruiser or similar).
• A stop at Sealine Beach, where the driver deflates the tyres and you can grab a karak tea.
• Dune bashing across the Mesaieed dune field — 30–45 minutes of controlled sliding, climbing and cresting.
• The Inland Sea (Khor Al Adaid), a UNESCO-recognised natural reserve where the dunes drop straight into turquoise water, with Saudi Arabia visible across the bay.
• Camel ride and sandboarding at the camp, plus water and soft drinks; overnight and dinner options add a barbecue and traditional tent.

Prices in 2026

Shared sunset safari: $60 (QAR 218) per adult, $45 per child aged 3–11, infants free. Groups of 6 or more pay a lower per-person group rate automatically at checkout. A private 4x4 for up to six travellers is $260 (QAR 950) — worth it for families, photographers who want extra stops, or anyone who wants to set the pace. Overnight safaris with dinner, breakfast and a tent are priced separately.

Sunset, morning or overnight?

Sunset is the classic and the one we recommend from October to April. Morning safaris start at 6 am, avoid the heat entirely and get you back to the city by 10 — ideal in summer or on a layover. Overnight safaris add dinner under the stars, a night in a tent and a sunrise walk on silent dunes; they suit couples and anyone who has done the day version before.

What to wear and bring

• Light, loose clothes; closed shoes for sandboarding (sandals are fine otherwise).
• Sunglasses, a hat and SPF 50 — the sand reflects the sun.
• Swimwear and a towel if you want to swim at the Inland Sea.
• A light jacket from November to February; desert evenings drop to 15°C.
• Phone or camera with a full battery — there is no charging at the camp.
• Motion-sickness tablets if you are prone; take them before the dunes, not during.

Is a desert safari suitable for children and older travellers?

Yes, with the right setup. Children from 3 travel at the child rate and love the camels and sandboarding; child seats are free on request. Dune bashing can be dialled down to a smooth drive for grandparents, pregnant travellers should avoid the bashing section, and wheelchair users can enjoy the Inland Sea from the vehicle and the camp. Qatar or Dubai?

Mistakes first-timers make

• Booking the cheapest listing without checking it includes hotel pickup and the Inland Sea itself — some 'safaris' stop at a dune viewpoint 20 minutes from the water.
• Eating a heavy lunch at 1 pm before a 2.30 pm pickup; eat light.
• Wearing flip-flops — fine for the car, hopeless for sandboarding and hot sand.
• Forgetting a jacket between November and February; the desert drops 10°C the moment the sun goes.
• Not telling the driver about motion sickness until the first dune. Say it at pickup.

A little history and geography

The dune field south of Mesaieed is the northern tip of the Rub' al Khali system — the sand that runs unbroken into Saudi Arabia and the Empty Quarter. Khor Al Adaid formed where a tidal channel cut through it, creating the only inland sea in the Gulf. Bedouin tribes grazed camels here until the 1950s; today it is a protected reserve with no permanent structures, which is why camps are temporary and rubbish is carried out. The Qatari word for the dunes' high crests is 'nagah'; drivers use it on the radio when they want the convoy to regroup on a summit.

What the price does and doesn't cover

Photography notes

The best frames are from the highest crest before the Inland Sea, 30 minutes before sunset, shooting back towards the water with the dunes' shadow side in front. Phones handle it well; if you carry a camera, a polariser darkens the sky and deepens the turquoise. Ask the driver for the 'photo crest' — every convoy has one. After sunset the blue hour lasts 20 minutes and is often better than the sunset itself.

Sand gets into every zip and lens. A zip-lock bag for your phone and a cheap microfibre cloth save the day.
